Abstract |
Purpose The purpose of this study is to compare the clinical and radiological outcomes between Kapandji technique and volar locking plating in dorsally unstable distal radius fracture. Methods and Materials: Ninety-four patients who had been treated surgically for dorsally unstable distal radius fracture were included in this restospective study. 44 patients were treated with Kapandji technique and 50 patients were treated with volar locking plating. The mean age was 50.5-years-old and the mean duration of follow up was 2 years in Kapandji technique group. The mean age was 49-years-old and mean duration of follow up was 1 year 6 months in volar locking plating group. Radiologic and clinical outcomes of the last follow-up and complications between two methods were compared. Statistical analysis were performed with use of Mann-Whitney test (SPSS 12.0) as a level of significance of 0.05 Result: In Kapandji technique group, AO type A included 24 patients and AO type C, 20 patients. In volar locking plate group, AO type A included 18 patients and AO type C, 32 patients. Radiologic and clinical outcomes in AO type A was not statistically significant difference between both groups. But in AO type C, pain score and DASH score of volar locking plate group were significantly better than those of Kapandji technique group, and radial shortening of volar locking plating group was significantly lesser than that of Kapandji technique group. Conclusion: We believe that volar locking plating could be more effective method than Kapandji technique in dorsally unstable intra-articular distal radius fracture. |
