Abstract |
Purpose The aim of our study was to describe the clinical and radiographic long term follow-up outcome of congenital ulnar club hand and congenital pseudarthrosis of both forearm bones managed by onebone forearm procedure. Materials and Methods: Two patients with congenital ulnar clubhand, and one with congenital pseudarthosis of the forearm, were treated by one-bone forearm procedure. The mean follow up period was 11 years 10 months. To evaluate postoperative function, we used the ten-point scoring system of Peterson and colleagues. Results: After the surgery, all patients had stable forearm. Their elbow and hand function were maintained, and all patients had no disturbance of hand function in daily activity. Remodelling of distal radius, broadening of AP and lateral diameters and resembling a ball-andsocket joint, was observed in all 3 patients on simple xray. Average 70 degrees of rotation was also observed in the remodelled wrist joints. On Peterson's scoring system, our patients scored the highest attainable score. Conclusion: The one-bone forearm procedure can be a successful salvage operation for forearm stability in selected patients and is indicated when instability and bone loss are irreparable by bone-grafting or other reconstructive procedures. |
