Abstract |
Purpose The current study was designed to analyze perioperative change of symptoms and functions in patients with idiopathic carpal tunnel syndrome, and to identify predictive factors influencing postoperative patients’satisfaction. Materials and Methods: Eighty nine hands of 56 patients who underwent carpal tunnel release for idiopathic carpal tunnel syndrome by one surgeon were included in the cohort. Clinical features evaluated for prognostic factor were as follows: duration of symptom, paresthesia, nocturnal pain, cold intolerance, weakness, thenar atrophy, Tinel sign, Phalen test and electrophysiologic test. We used two forms of questionnaires (Boston questionnaire, DASH) for the prospective evaluation of patients’satisfaction preoperatively and postoperatively. Results: Overall symptoms and functions improved gradually after surgery. Short duration of symptom, nocturnal pain, cold intolerance and subjective weakness were related to postoperative satisfaction (p<0.05). No statistically ignificant correlation was found between electrophysiologic grades and patients’satisfaction. Conclusion: This mid-term prospective study suggests that symptom duration, noctunal pain, cold intolerance and subjective weakness can be predictive factors influencing patients’satisfaction after carpal tunnel release. As a preliminary report, however, the study needs larger investigation with sufficient follow-up. |
