Abstract
Purpose
The aim of this study was to develop a computer model and simulation technique of an external fixation system with fractured distal radius to achieve fracture reduction and deformity correction in distal radius through fixator joint adjustment. Materials and Methods: The 3-D graphic model of distal radius with various fracture types under external fixation was developed using commercial CAD software. The biomechanical analysis program of fracture reduction was developed to obtain the necessary rotations and translations at each joint of the fixator to reduce the fractures and correct the deformities. Six types of fractures in distal radius were assumed as test examples to validate the developed analysis. Results : Six types of distal radius fractures were reduced by the fixator joint values calculated using the joint analysis program. And the graphic simulation results showed the validation of the analysis results and the visualization of fracture reduction process. Conclusion: The developed graphic model and joint analysis technique can be used to provide pre-operative planning to reduce given fractures, correct the deformity by osteotomy, and provide adequate lengthening. In addition, the developed technique can be utilized as a tool for investigation of a fixator’s adjustability, facilitation of patient care planning and medical personnel training.
