Abstract
Melorheostosis is a rare disorder characterized by a linear hyperostosis of cortical bone, joint pain and stiffness, deformity and limited motion. In the hand, the disease is often disabling because of progressive hyperostosis of the soft tissues but no joint involvement. Two cases of melorheostosis involving fingers and wrists with their histologic characteristics and the efficacy of bone scan to detect the disease activity are reported. Slow but progressively developing pain and the increased uptake on bone scan over the affected limb was the most important signs of recurrence or progression for extracortical hyperostosis. The longitudinal growth of affected fingers are not changed but thickened and deformed due to melorheos tosis. The surgical treatment for correction of the soft tissue contractures and finger deformities proved difficult, but their bony union after corrective osteotomy is achieved in normal pattern.
