Abstract |
Purpose : To report the results and complication with endoscopic carpal tunnel release. Materials & Methods : Between 1998 October and May 2000, One hunded twenty-one wrists in 95 carpal tunnel syndrom patients were retrospectively evaluated for the results following carpal tunnel release. Operation were performed using Chow dual-portal technique(ECTRA II System) under local anesthesia on an outpatient basis. Preoperative and postoperative clinical and electrophysiologic data were analyzed. Results : Almost all patients showed resolution of symptoms such as tingling sensation, paresthesia and/or hyperesthesia in median nerve distribution area over night after surgery. Numbness, however, lasted longer and disappeared postoperative 10 weeks(mean). The majority of patients retured to theris job in 4 weeks following endoscopic release. Electrophysiologic studies showed definite improvement when compared with preoperative studies. As complications, one case of neuropraxia that was recovered in 8 weeks, one case of incomplete release, one case of tendon injury and two case of superficial palmar arch injury and one case of breakage of dissector followed by conversion to open release were noted Conclusion : Endoscopic carpal tunnel release is one of useful surgical options in treatment of carpal tunnel syndrom. but it is a technically demanding procedure. For the safe procedure, it is necessary to perform operation under local anesthesia, to locate accurate portal and to have exact knowledge of anatomy. |
