Abstract
Arthrodesis of proximal interphalangeal joint or metacarpophalangeal joint results in remarkable functional loss of the hand for daily living. The ankylosed or deformed interphalangeal joint or metacarpophalangeal joint of the finger could be mobilized by surgical arthroplastic procedure. The authors have experienced 8 cases of perichondrial resurfacing arthroplasty of the proximal interphalangeal joint for post-traumatic arthritis from January 1991 to November 1999. In the functional evaluation by Seradge's criteria after surgery, four of eight cases showed good and another four cases showed fair result. Perichondrial resurfacing arthroplasty has been found valuable as a method of reconstruction for ankylosed or deformed proximal interphalangeal joint in selected cases.
