ANALYSIS OF THE SURGICAL TREATMENT OF BONY MALLET FINGER

Abstract
Purpose
To evaluate the effect of surgical treatment of displaced bony mallet finger of articular surface greater than 20 percent in Doyle's classification, type IVB and IVC. Materials and Methods: A retrospective series of 25 fingers(25 cases) of the bony mallet finger from July 1992 through June 1999 by open reduction, percutaneous K-wire fixation of the fracture fragment and the distal interphalangeal joint and open reduction, pullout wire suture and percutaneous K-wire fixation of the distal interphalangeal joint. Results: Excellent results were obtained from 19 fingers(76.0%), good from 4 fingers(16.0%) and fair from 2 fingers(8.0%) evaluated by Crawford criteria. Conclusion: Bony mallet finger treated by open reduction and K-wire fixation showed more than good results(92.0%).
