Abstract
Injury to the ulnar collateral ligament of the thumb metacarpophalangeal joint remains controversial topic despite numerous reports in the literature. Stener lesion is responsible for failure of closed treatment. Unfortunately, ideal diagnostic test is not available, and the significance of the Stener lesion remains a logical but unproved assumption. Authors experienced 6 cases of Stener lesion, from 1982 to 1998. The cause of injury were downhill ski injury in 5 cases and basket ball injury in one case. Elapsed time from injury to operation were average 12 days(3∼63 days). During follow-up period two cases return to previous sports activity but, 3 cases feel discomforts during severe wrist motion. Grip and pinch power gradually increase but no more than 80% of normal power.
