Abstract |
Purpose : To compare clinical efficacy of three methods for carpal tunnel release-traditional open, endoscopic and minimal incision open. Material and Methods : A prospective, consecutive series of 206 hands (132 patients) with medically unresponsive, confirmed carpal tunnel syndrome in the period of Aug. 1991 to Dec. 1997 with no other concomitant hand pathology was selected. Traditional open release in 58 hands(31patients), one portal endoscopic release in 35 hands(21 patients) and minimal incision open release using Indianatome in 113 hands(80 patients) were performed. The efficacy of the procedures were compared by rating the patient postoperative symptoms and grip power and two point discrimination at 12 months follow up. Results : No severe complication occurred. Grip power, two-point discrimination, and asked and rating subjective symptoms of pillar pain, tingling sensation, numbness, weakness, clumsiness, edema and stiffness were not statistically different whether traditional open, endoscopic, and minimal incision open release had been performed. Conclusion : No ultimate difference in their efficacy as regards symptom relief had been observed among traditional open, endoscopic and minimal open release. |
