Abstract |
Small joint arthrodesis in the hand remains a valuable reconstructive tool for treatment of arthritic, unst able, and traumatized joints. Fixation methods for the arthrodesis vary from the less rigid Kirschner wire fixation to more rigid internal fixation methods, such as tension band wiring, plates and screws, or compression screws. Despite the many options are available, drawbacks to current arthrodesis methods exist. Post operative immobilization, with its functional restrictions and inherent risk of stiffness, must be used with less rigid forms of fixation. More rigid internal fixation requires insertion of bulky hardware and presents the late risk of prominent hard ware or tendon adhesions that may necessit ate secondary surgical procedures. Advant ages identified for the use of Acutrak screw in arthrodesis procedures include the ability to achieve compression, fixation and early mobilization. Since February, 1996, we have been using a compression arthrodesis with Acutrak screw. A series of 14 cases has now been compiled and is present ed in this report. |
