Abstract
Dislocations of metacarpophalangeal joint of the thumb are not common and mostly dorsal caused by hyperextension injuries. Differ from dislocations of other fingers, they are known as can usually be reduced by closed manipulation. But complex dorsal dislocation of a metacarpophalangeal joint is an unusual and difficult problem. Many of them are irreducible and require open reduction. In complex dor sal dislocation, the protruded met acarpal neck is caught by buttonhole of torn ant erior joint capsule and intrinsic muscles, and the impinged ruptured volar plate, sesamoids or the tendon of flexon pollicis brevis may prevent reduction. Occasionally, simple reducible dislocation can be convert ed to complex irreducible ones by the nappropriate traction method and the proper reduction technique is import ant . We experienced 7 cases of dislocations of metacarpophalangeal joint of thumb during the last twelve year s, and report those cases with the discussion about the structures which prevent reduction and the proper management methods.
