Abstract |
The results of single stage redution procedure for macrodactyly are reported. A lateral zigzag skin incision on the convex side of the atTected digits was used. The distal and Convex side of the nail were removed in addition to subcutaneous fatty tissue. In order to correct the length of the digit. resection of the distal part of the terminal phalanx and resection of the distal interphalangeal joint (DIP) combined with arthrodesis of the DIP joint or angulation osteotomy of the middle phalanx were performed. In order to narrow the digit, defatting and resection of the enlarged digital nerve were performed on the side of the digit combined with resection of the skin where the resected nerve innervated. Two patients, 2 hands, 4 macrodactyly digits were treated with above procedure. The index finger in 2 cases, the middle finger in 1 case, and the thumb in I case. The ages at initial surgery was 9 years and 16 years. The follow-up period was 1 year. At follow-up. length of the digits was corrected satisfactorily in all. Thickening of the digits still remained but significant cosmetic improvement was achieved in all cases. Satisfactory thickness was achieved in all digits. There was mild sensory change in a small area on one side of the digit, however there was no sensory change on the pulp of the finger tip. |
