Ulnar lengthening for the treatment of Kienbock's disease

Abstract
Authors have reviewed eight cases of Kienbock's disease in order to analyze the results of ulnar lengthening from June, 1987 to June, 1994, at the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, Guro Hospital, Korea University. We evaluated the clnical and radiologic results preoperatively and postoperatively during the follow-up periods and the results were as followed; 1. Five cases were male, three cases were female and mean age at operation was 33.4 years(29- 60 years). 2. Among eight cases, five cases had trauma history. 3. Six cases were in Lichtman's stage II and two cases in stage III. 4. Five cases were associated with ulnar minus variant. 5. The chief complaint at first visit was pain and swelling in all cases and limited range of motion of wrist joint in four cases. 6. At follow up after ulnar lengthening, pain and swelling was relieved in seven cases. 7. At follow up after ulnar lengthening, radiologic findings have not progressed in seven cases except one which progressed from stage II to III.
